Ryanair has encouraged plane passengers to stop wearing jeans on board flights.

The airline, which regularly posts updates and advice on its social media accounts, suggested passengers forgo jeans on flights.

In a post on its TikTok account @ryanair, the carrier shared a video with the caption: ‘It’s 2026, let’s stop travelling in jeans.’

The clip then showed one aircraft descending – with a voiceover saying: ‘Thank you for flying Ryanair.’

The video sparked debate in the comments section, with many viewers jumping in to share their thoughts.

One wrote: ‘Well then maybe let me bring a bigger bag to PUT MY JEANS IN.’

A second chimed in: ‘Are you gonna charge for wearing jeans now?’

A third commented: ‘What is wrong with jeans please explain’ – to which Ryanair responded: ‘what’s right with them?’

Wearing jeans during a flight has been criticised before, with some experts weighing in on the matter.

Dr Hugh Pabarue, a leading physician and vein specialist with Metro Vein Centres, has argued in the past there are negative health effects if doing so.

He told the Huffington Post: ‘The clothing we wear when we fly can significantly impact our circulation. 

‘For example, tight clothing is not recommended.

‘Wearing leggings and other restrictive garments, such as skinny jeans that are too tight, reduces blood’s ability to flow into and out of the legs.

‘Sitting for extended periods of time, especially on planes, can lead to blood pooling in the legs, increasing the risk for deep vein thrombosis – a serious medical condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein of the leg.

‘Wearing clothes that are too tight can potentially lead to conditions like compartment syndrome or Meralgia paresthetica, causing numbness, tingling and severe leg pain.’

It comes after the US Transportation Secretary Sean P Duffy launched a campaign titled ‘The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You’ in November.

In an advert for the campaign, he said: ‘Let’s bring civility and manners back,’ following a montage of social media videos showing passengers putting their bare feet on seats, starting fights on planes and other unruly behaviour.

He added: ‘Ask yourself, are you helping a pregnant woman put her bag in the overhead bin? Are you dressing with respect? Well, come on, you lycra-clad reprobate, are you? Duffy demands to know!

‘Whether it’s a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better, which maybe encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let’s try not to wear slippers and pyjamas as we come to the airport.’
